1981 thru 1984 engines are easiest identified by the round exhaust ports
on the cylinder head and raised ring shape on the top of the pistons:

22R 2.4 L 4/cyl. OHC 8-valve (1981 - 1982)
above uses a double roller timing chain

22R and 22RE 2.4 L 4/cyl. OHC 8-valve (1983 - 1984)
above uses a 98 link single-row timing chain

PLEASE NOTE: very few parts for the early 22R engines (above) will work on or in the following late model 22R/RE engines.
They're just not interchangeable! Please e-mail me with any questions regarding identification!

1985 thru 1995 engines are easiest identified by the "pear-shaped" exhaust ports
on the cylinder head and the flat-top pistons w/ 2 valve reliefs and a 96 link T-chain:

22RE 2.4 L 4/cyl. OHC 8-valve (1985 thru 1994) -fuel injected
