The '83 -'84 models of this engine are easily identified by the round exhaust port on the cylinder head and the "raised ring" surface on the top of the pistons. This engine also uses a 98 link, single-row timing chain because the block is just a little taller than the '85 and newer engines. Many engine swaps have occurred over the years and it will help save time and frustration to double-check the identity of your engine before ordering parts if you don't know the vehicle's history.
